About corrie heinz & Pond and beyond kayak

Passionate About Inspiring Others

Corrie Heinz is a Block Island native, general naturalist, and the only eco tour guide on the island. As the owner of Pond and Beyond Kayak, her main goal in creating the business was to not only rent kayaks for fellow adventurers, but lead fun and informative tours around the Great Salt Pond teaching kids and all with desire to learn about the ecology and conservation importance in Block Island. Corrie studied at URI, majoring in Environmental Management, During the summers at college she interned at the The Nature Conservancy. Post-graduation, Corrie worked at the Galilee Bird Sanctuary, where she did research for three months and later with the US Fish and Wildlife Service as an seasonal bio-tech and caretaker of the Beane Point Property (a 21-acre piece of land and national wildlife refuge on the Great Salt Pond).

Corrie continues to perform more and more eco-tours, while hosting interns seasonally to carry out conservation teaching and efforts.

Kayak Rentals and Tours

Pond and Beyond offers the choice of both independent rentals (single or tandem boats available) and an array of tour sessions.

Some of the tour types we witnessed include:

Eco Tours- Where Corrie leads groups through basic paddle strokes, techniques, and gives an overview of the Great Salt Pond and basic common ecology present.

Full Moon Tours- Groups meet just before sunset to watch the full moon pass over the Great Salt Pond. Corrie teaches the groups about the correlation between tides, moon phases, and their effects on coasts/ecosystems.

Fun Fridays- Corrie takes out groups of kids where she teaches kayaking basics, beachcombs, hikes, and teaches eco science by showing the kids different species around the Pond.
